From the beginning nearly 34 years ago as a small operation with just two field Veterinarians and a handful of staff, the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project The Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project, Inc. has grown into the largest veterinary organization that delivers life-saving veterinary care in situ to wild mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) and other great apes in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

As well, the MGVP monitors the health of mountain and eastern lowland gorillas (Gorilla beringei graueri) habituated for tourism and research, conducts research on diseases that threaten gorillas, helps improve the health of people who come into daily contact with gorillas, and helps build capacity in the region for wildlife veterinary medicine. With 12 veterinarians deployed on the ground in Africa, as well as supporting technical and administrative staff in-country and in the United States, the MGVP works closely with wildlife authorities in all three mountain gorilla range countries (RDB in Rwanda, UWA in Uganda and ICCN in the DRC) and other gorillas conservation organizations to assure the health and survival of mountain gorillas and other great apes.
